Thoughts on the TL role....

So far I have looked at Topic 2: Role of the TL. I have found clips that are relevant to this topic and have increased my understanding of these roles.

On my 1st year Prac, I went with my class to the library on a weekly basis. During this time the librarian read the students a story and then assisted them to find items to borrow. The resources were also kept in the library and the librarian assisted with sorting through to find a relevant one. The librarian knew exactly what resources were available for use.

2nd year Prac was a similar experience. The librarian came to the school once a week and saw each class for one session. Yes I was at a small rural school! During the session, the librarian would read a new addition to the library, then conduct a relevant activity. Finally she would assist with borrowing items. Resources were also kept in the library but a search needed to be conducted to find relevant resources.

3rd year Prac I was at another rural school. The Wagga City Library Van came to the town once a fortnight and students went out in class groups to borrow books. The community also used the van to borrow books. On Friday afternoons, students were allocated time to read books to themselves and then the librarian would read a new addition to the library to the students and then assist with borrowing.

This sums up my own personal experiences of the library and librarian. Beginning this subject I was overwhelmed with the idea of one person dealing with so many roles at one time. Now, after completing my own research into the various roles I realised that all the roles are linked and are interchangable by merging roles together (eg media specialist/instructional partner). It also seems to me that collaboration and interaction with other staff assists the TL in completing their roles.

This clip offers words of advice to beginning teachers. TL's can offer support with resources and the library allows students to be seen in a different context.

This final clip shows a view of libraries in the past and compares them to libraries of the future. It is really succinct in stating its view.
